Death Certificates

Death Certificates for the Dublin Area

No Post-Mortem / Autopsy:

If the death occurs in a hospital/hospice, the medical paperwork (the death notification form) will either be forwarded to the next-of-kin, or collected from the hospital or hospice, who then must go to the Registrar’s Office located at Lucia House (left-hand side entrance of Joyce House), 8/11 Lombard Street East, off Pearse Street, Dublin 2 (phone 01 863 8200) to register the death and obtain the death certificates at the same time. It is advisable to contact the registrar’s office in advance by phone or checking www.groireland.ie to obtain the information required to register the death and to also obtain several death certificates.

If a GP doctor is to issue the medical certificate (where the death occurs in a house or nursing home) then the next-of-kin should bring the death notification form or medical certificate to the Registrar’s office to register the death and obtain the death certificates as stated above.

Post-Mortem / Autopsy:

If there is to be a post-mortem, then the Coroner will send the medical paperwork to the Registrar’s office to have the death registered, although this will take between 5-12 months. However, you can contact the Dublin Coroner at Store Street at 01 874 6684 or coroners@dublincity.ie and have the interim death certificates posted out to you. Interim death certificates state that the death has occurred, but will not state the cause of death, which will not be finalised until the Coroner has registered the death.
